Where Does Cultural Awareness fit in General Practice:

Many health professionals are deeply troubled by the persistent health inequities between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and non Indigenous peoples. When providing a health service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples it should be noted that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people's concept of health is holistic, health issues are closely related to the land, community, spirituality and the traditional life cycle.

The non Indigenous health workforce needs to be culturally competent, knowledgeable and skillful with respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people and their health. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are more likely to access and experience better outcomes from services that are culturally safe. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community do not enjoy equal access to primary healthcare, in both urban and rural areas.

SouthEast Primary HealthCare Network is having an event on Tuesday 18th August 2009 and would like you to join us with Dorothy Burton, a Gunditchmara / Jowyn woman who will speak on spirituality, some good communication tips on awareness of the extended family, kinship structure when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, each family group having a spokesperson, decisions will not be made on the spot but by consensus of that family group and cultural safety and what that means.
